Artificial Anatomy  

Teacher resources, all ages

This web site highlights the National Museum of American History's varied collection of papier-mâché anatomical models and provides additional in-depth information not included in the original three-dimensional exhibition. The exhibit showcases two major themes. It explores the history and use of papier-mâché anatomical models, and, then focuses on their construction, conservation, and preservation. Human, veterinary and botanical models are featured.

Alien Empire (Insects)

Elementary/Middle school, teacher resources
This site is a multimedia Web companion to the three-week PBS NATURE miniseries. Visitors can explore insects using articles, graphics, video, sound, animation, puzzles, crafts, and activities. Teacher resources are also provided.

This site includes information, research, and links on topics such as: cell biology, human biology, karyotyping, Immunology, DNA, HIV, biochemistry, developmental biology, genetics. It also features a children’s section of activities, and puzzles and a K-12 outreach program.

BioInteractive  

Teacher resources, middle & high school
The Virtual Labs Series produced by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is designed to educate people about science and technology. This site features several virtual labs where users can explore techniques employed. Virtual labs include: Bacterial Identification, Cardiology,  Neurophysiology and Immunology.

BioMedia’s Biology  

Teacher Resources, middle and high school
This site features biology photo-essays of microorganisms and biology-related pictures. It contains contests and quizzes, teacher resources, free teaching guides, Quicktime movie clips, and annotated web link sets on biology topics and concepts. These links are good starting points for study, or  web research projects in biology.. Five sets are available with more to be posted.

Bugscope  

All ages, teacher resources
The Bugscope project is a free educational outreach program for K-12 classrooms. The project provides a resource to classrooms so that they may remotely operate a scanning electron microscope to image "bugs" at high magnification. The microscope is remotely controlled in real time from a classroom computer over the Internet using a web browser.  Bugscope provides a state-of-the-art microscope resource for teachers that can be readily integrated into classroom activities. The site features classroom tips, additional resources and links, insect information, color images and a 3D gallery.

Cell and Molecular Biology Online

This site offers general resources for the biology community with an emphasis on information for cell and molecular biologists. It features an extensive list of links. It also offers educational resources, courses, texts, images, videos, information, and activities.

This site offers a group activity to teach the functions of a cell.

Cells Alive!

Middle school
This site is highly visual. It offers movies and animated illustrations on cell processes, parasites, penicillin and more. It features interactive plant and animal cells, pictures and links. Topics include cell biology, microbiology, immunology, and microscopy.

Cell Biology

This site offers basic information and activities on many cell-related topics. These include: online onion root tips: phases of the cell cycle, cell membranes, cell signaling, cell study, mitosis, meiosis, prokaryotes, eukaryotes, & viruses and the cytoskeleton.

Cell Webquest II

 

Elementary/Middle school
This webquest encourages students to imagine that they have been chosen to be placed in a space ship, shrunk down to a microscopic size and injected into the blood stream of a dog named Fosfo. Their mission is to learn as much as possible about three organelles or structures of the cell using the provided links.

Frog Dissection

Middle/High school, teacher resources
This site features a virtual frog dissection. It includes video, resources, diagrams and instructions.

The Great Plant Escape

Elementary, teacher resources (also in Spanish)
This site offers students the chance to solve a mystery. They will use clues, experiments and problems to learn about plants. Facts, activities and a glossary are provided.

This site introduces students to the inner workings of a variety of different things. Cell topics include: cell parts, enzymes, DNA, reproduction, poisons, antibiotics, viruses, genetic diseases, and biotechnology. Human Body

This site features resources, games, articles, and information on a variety of topics including: organs, muscles, skeleton, nervous system, psychology, emotions, personality, intelligence, the brain, and mental disorders.

This site features illustrations and text from Gray’s Anatomy. Users can search for information on any body part or body system.

Virtual Library: Cells

Teacher resources, high school, and some middle/elementary
Many of the resources listed on these pages were designed for the scientist, educator, intermediate-to-advanced student or person with a general knowledge of modern biology. However,
basic introductions and tutorials are also listed, and resources requiring little or no background are labeled as Beginner's Level. Topics include: cell biology, cell cycle, blood vessels, genes, cell development, cell parts, and more advanced information. This site also offers related sections on agriculture, biological science, botany, environment, medicine, zoology, chemistry, microscopy, and physics.
