Industrialization in 19th Century New Jersey

In this cooperative learning activity students will analyze the confluence of geography, resources and technology in New Jersey that contributed to the growth of 19th Century industrialization and its’ characteristics. 


Italian Immigrants in New Jersey

  • Understand the underlying reasons for emigration from Italy during the late 1800s.
  • Explore the economic factors that contributed to the settlement of these Italian immigrants in southern New Jersey.
  • Examine the impact of immigration on families.

Paterson New Jersey after the Civil War

In this lesson students will investigate the importance of Paterson, NJ as a manufacturing center.  They will explore the working conditions that existed and the resulting strike.


The Philanthropy of Andrew Carnegie

In this lesson, students will gain an understanding of the life and times of Andrew Carnegie. Through the application of “jigsaw” cooperative learning, students will become “experts” in specific content of Carnegie’s life and philanthropy and “teach” classmates about what they have learned. Students will create a documentary script and/or video documentary of Andrew Carnegie in which they illuminate key characteristics of the man.


Walt Whitman

In this lesson students, will be introduced to the famous American poet Walt Whitman by watching a CSI power point, who’s haunting the bridges of South Jersey?  During the power point, students will complete an ESP&G graphic organizer. Next, working with a partner or in small groups, students will interpret Walt Whitman’s poem entitled, ‘O Captain! My Captain!’ Students will write a full paragraph about how slavery inspired Whitman to write poetry followed by a paragraph of something in the world today, that they feel is unjust or needs to be changed.
