K-6 Lesson Plans
(Colonial Period)
Virginia Charter
In
the opening activity (class discussion) of this lesson, students will
brainstorm the necessities needed to run a successful colony. Next
students will investigate the Virginia Colony by successfully
sequencing important events in their pursuit of self-government.
Additionally, students will use the Ordinance of Virginia, paragraph 2
(primary source) to gain an understanding of the structure of the
Virginia Colony Government. Finally students will be challenged to
use the material from the lesson to draw conclusions about the
fairness of the Virginia Colony Government.
Constitutions of Carolina, 1669
This lesson will introduce students to John Locke and
the role he played in the early history of the Carolina colony. The
notion of legitimate slavery as an outcome of war and the rights of
landowners will also be explored.
Mayflower Compact
This lesson will explore the concept of fair and unfair
rules. Students will also discuss the need for laws and identify the
Mayflower Compact as a forerunner of American democracy.
Toleration
Act of 1689
This lesson will explore the separatist groups within
the Church of England and how a state religion was established. The
students will also analyze the disadvantages of a single established
state religion.
The Navigation
Acts of the Colonial Period
Students will read about Navigation Acts and have the opportunity to
enhance their vocabulary of the colonial period. They will use a
facsimile primary source document to investigate goods and categorize
goods affected by the laws. Students will also analyze the impact of
the laws on England and the colonies.
Quakers in NJ, 1667-1702
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to the Quakers in
New Jersey during the Colonial Period. In addition, it will challenge
students to compare Quaker society to their current society. Students
will also have the opportunity to utilize and enhance essential map
skills.
