Test Your Phone Line

Want to know if your phone line is slowing you down?  U.S. Robotics will tell you for free if your phone line is ready for a 56k modem.  Use a program like HyperTerminal (in the Accessories folder in the Programs folder on your Start menu) to dial (888) 877-9248.  When prompted, type LINE TEST and hit enter.  After a few minutes, you'll get a report on the quality of your line.

Test Your Internet Connection

Does your connection seem slower than it ought?  Here are some sites that tell you how fast your connection is.  These pages, by the way, work with any sort of connection.  Please note, though, that slowdowns may occur anywhere on the Internet, and have nothing to do with your modem or ISP.  Your computer's particulars can also affect speed.  If you can, test at different times of the day.

The Modem Speed Test Page
This page has four different tests.  One of the tests is also available from a second site. If you run the tests from both sites, you'll reduce the influence of bottlenecks on the Net.

Modem Speed Test
These tests just download big files, and you can watch the speed in your status bar in the lower left-hand corner (for Netscape Navigator) or in the File Download dialog box (for Internet Explorer)
