Learning through Learning Centers Whether you have one computer or four computers in your classroom, learning centers can be an integral part of the learning environment. Come explore a collection of learning center ideas and learn to create some of your own. Recommended for: K-6 Teachers. Strategies to Meet the Common Core Literacy Standards in Content Areas Gr. 1 – 5 The new Common Core English Language Arts standards require specific literacy proficiencies in all content areas. The goal is to provide 30% to 50% of all reading instruction to be completed with informational texts, a move away from instruction that has been based primarily on all narrative texts. This workshop will focus on WHY the standards are being implemented, WHAT is contained in the standards and HOW to engage students in specific strategies to read and comprehend complex informational texts. Additionally, an analysis of the type of Multiple Choice questions that test comprehension and align with the Standards will be discussed and practiced. This workshop is appropriate for all content areas as well as reading and language arts teachers. Learn how to begin this process and continue to allow students to feel safe and secure while learning. You will learn about the MIND UP curriculum as well as the most recent research about SEL and its effectiveness in increasing learning, memory, and testing. This workshop will lead to positive results for your students and your classroom environment. Recommended for: All educators Top of Page SMART Board across the Curriculum: A First Course Make the most of your SMART board and watch class participation and engagement soar. First you will master SMART board basics. Then you will learn how to plan and prepare your SMART lessons on any computer using SMART notebook software. Come and take back interactive enhanced lessons to use with your SMART board. We will provide a list of websites that are particularly SMART board “friendly.” No more fumbling for transparencies, hyperlinks, diagrams, or files. Your lesson will flow seamlessly and learning will increase as students participate as active learners. Please bring your curriculum materials. Note: Smart Notebook software is free to Smart board users and can be purchased for use on other brands of interactive white boards Recommended for: Anyone interested in using a SMART board Getting Started on Moodle: Your Online Classroom Having an online classroom is a great way to engage and energize your students while in school and at home. Moodle is the free software that makes this possible. Learn how to create an interesting and interactive environment where resources are shared and students can collaborate. Just think of all the paper you'll save by having digital handouts and having students take quizzes and submit assignments online. This class will teach you how to set up your Moodle classroom. (You will need to talk to your technology department f your school does not yet use Moodle. This class does no include setting up a Moodle server.) Recommended for: teachers interested in Moodle Thinkfinity 202 – A Review Have you taken an introductory course about Thinkfinity and only remember a few bits and pieces on how to use it? Come back for a “refresher “. Give yourself the opportunity to reacquaint yourself with this fantastic resource. Let’s look at the updates and some of the new sites that have been added to this amazing free portal. Join Thinkfinity’s Community. Let the sunshine in and become an expert user of Thinkfinity. Recommended for: Anyone that wants a refresher course Grades 3-5: Teaching 21st Century Math to the CORE (Content Standards) Number sense and computation to support the new (and old) standards We will begin with a comparison of the old and new standards and follow with discovery based activities that can be used with teacher directed lessons with one computer and projector or/and then by students with individual computers to help build proficiency based on a better UNDERSTANDING of mathematical concepts. Bring your math textbook and a flash drive and you will leave with marvelous free resources and strategies. Grade level appropriate activities and problem solving included. Topics include: What the dangers are out there; How you can keep up with your teens and students; Understanding on-line lingo; On-line predators; Social Networking Sites; Cyber-Bullying and Stalking and Resources for parents and teachers. NO COMPUTER EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. Recommended for: Teachers, parents wanting information on cyber bulling An Afternoon for iPad Beginners This workshop will cover all of the basic functions and features of an iPad. From everyday buttons to neat features, all with be touched upon in ‘An afternoon for iPad Beginners.’. If you’re new to using an iPad, come and find out what they’re all about. We will also be discussing how to download Apps as well as how you can tell if an App is good or not. This workshop will give you all the information you need to effectively use an iPad. Please bring your own iPad Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum Enhancing students' reading and writing skills can be done in every subject area, not just language arts, without deviating from the curriculum. Specific techniques and technology resources can be used with students as they read in the content areas so they truly understand - not memorize. Writing assignments can be designed to help students learn course content, or "write to learn." Participants will develop or improve reading and writing assignments in the content areas to teach content effectively, discover ways to evaluate student comprehension efficiently, and use technology resources to aid in the process. During this workshop you will learn to hyperlink, insert video clips, and create your own interactive manipulatives for the content area and grade that you teach.
